Do you often experience bloating, abdominal pain, or diarrhea? Does your stomach protest when you eat something cold or spicy? Does your stomach rumble frequently? If so, you may be suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), a condition that affects approximately 15% of the global population—about 1 in 7 people. Common symptoms include indigestion, constipation, and abdominal pain. A Low FODMAP diet is a recommended dietary approach for managing IBS. ZymeBase’s proprietary product, Fibalance™ PHGG (Partially Hydrolyzed Guar Gum), has now been officially certified as Low FODMAP, offering a safe and effective option for alleviating IBS.
What is a Low FODMAP Certification?
The Low FODMAP certification, developed by Monash University, helps millions of people determine if a food is suitable for a Low FODMAP diet. Monash University collaborates with the food industry to ensure that only products and recipes meeting their stringent Low FODMAP standards receive the certification. Certified products are easily recognized by the Monash Certified logo and are listed in the world’s first FODMAP diet app, which Monash University also created. What are FODMAP and Low FODMAP diets?
Researchers at Monash University identified a group of short-chain carbohydrates present in everyday foods, which they named FODMAPs (Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols). High FODMAP intake can cause malabsorption in the gastrointestinal tract, leading to osmotic diarrhea due to their small molecular size. They are also rapidly fermented by gut bacteria, producing large amounts of gas, resulting in symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or constipation. The Low FODMAP diet has been proven to reduce these gastrointestinal symptoms [2,3]. Not only is the Low FODMAP diet recommended for people with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), but even healthy individuals may experience similar symptoms if they consume excessive amounts of high FODMAP foods over an extended period [4,5,6].

ZymeBase's Fibalance™ PHGG (Partially Hydrolyzed Guar Gum)
Most common prebiotics on the market are high in FODMAPs, which can lead to post-ingestion discomfort due to their small molecular size. Fibalance™ PHGG, a gentle prebiotic that has been certified as Low FODMAP, offers several advantages. It has a regulatory effect on both diarrhea and constipation and promotes regular bowel movements. Its gentle fermentation makes it well-tolerated by individuals with sensitive digestive systems. It is efficiently utilized by gut bacteria with a high fermentation rate, resulting in higher short-chain fatty acid production and enhancing gut immunity. It also optimizes gut microbiota, alleviates intestinal inflammation, and supports the regulation of blood sugar and weight control [7]. Fibalance™ is now widely used in products like yogurts and beverages, meal replacement shakes, functional snacks, and dietary supplements, making it a gentle and natural option suitable for all ages.
